Resurrecting Dead Links

Dead links are part of the Internet landscape

We regularly check to make sure our reference links are valid.

Despite our best efforts however there will always be dead links in the Stats Link Canada database. The Internet is not a static research environment. Files are moved around or deleted quite regularly.

Information is generally made available on web sites in order to attract traffic, sell products or establish corporate credibility.  It has nothing to due with the altruistic motive of "sharing information".

Whether it is to save face or server space companies and organizations have therefore adopted the particularly annoying habit of removing files that they deem are too old.  It does not matter whether or not any more current information can be provided in its place.  In some cases we have seen entire "libraries" of useful reports removed in one weekend's "site redesign"!

While we all fear the worst when you come across a dead link there are actually three last chances left for life.

  1. Server resurrection

  2. Web Site redesign

  3. Go to the Source

If none of the above options help you solve a dead link issue (or even if they do), please let us know and we will try to assist you in locating the file in question.  Click here to report dead links.  (NB: You will need to take down the reference ID Number of the dead link).
